"Gwydyr Hairdressing Saloon is one of the oldest barbers in the South of England."
With our knowledge and experience we are able to offer a wide choice of modern or traditional styles for hair and beard that suit you and your needs. Gwydyr pride ourselves in being able to offer a top level service to all ages young, old and the busy bit in between.
Gwydyr was established in 1890 and purpose built as part of the mansions for residents and the general public to use and enjoy. The Saloon was last refurbished in 1936, so its current decor is all period including the imported barbering chairs from Chicago circa 1930’s.
Gwydyr also had a resident poet, with poems on display and the Saloon also featured in national newspapers, catalogues, advert campaigns, music videos and on the BBC.
The Saloon appears in The Pevsner architectural guide.
My experience in the saloon started in 1991, supplemented with a professional Crowns hairdressing academy course. I learned the art of barbering from the ground up. Starting with sweeping the floors, making tea and folding towels, working up to shampooing clients, tapering hairlines and eventually to cutting and perfecting hair styles.
"I thank my father and fellow master barbers teaching me the skills which I have used at Gwydyr ever since."
My father started at Gwydyr after finnishing school on the friday of the Easter weekend 1957. He worked his way up, mastered barbering to eventually owning the business years later, and passing on to me, his son..
"My father brought myself and my brothers here over 50 years ago and now I bring my two little boys, there is not only history between us but also family friendship, I hope and believe that my children's children will also come here. Always a pleasure."
"First rate barbers and friendly staff. The interior fixtures and fittings are all original 1930's. Absolutely stuning."
"Very experienced local barbers. I love being able to just walk in at my convienience. Great conversation and a pleasant experience with a coffee while waiting to boot."
